Introduction

本书是一本通俗读物，描述从中世纪到当代的西方艺术的历史。相较于那些聚焦于艺术家生平事迹及其贡献的著作，我更倾向于考察诸如某个时期的艺术家身在何方，参与了哪些运动，受到了什么人、哪些作品的影响而形成了自己的风格。

将绘画展现为风格和艺术运动的编年序列，并不是一件容易的事情。绘画史不是井然有序的，各种标签往往不统一，有时还相互重叠。哪位画家属于哪个团体，或者艺术家早期参与某特定艺术团体的经历是否对他们后来，或者更为成熟时期的作品产生了影响，这些都是很难厘清的。在某些案例中，一些画家被放到一起，这并不一定是因为他们在一起工作，他们甚至可能是根本没有来往的，把他们放在一起，只是因为他们的作品拥有相同的主题和理念。我并不想掩饰他们的不足，只希望能够用别具一格的叙述而让读者更好地理解，比如说：为什么维米尔（Vermeer）会用某种特殊的风格创作，他在艺术史的格局中处于怎样的位置等问题。

我不会依赖任何“绘画是什么”的定义。在本书中，我将广义地思考绘画，将中世纪画家的木板蛋彩画到现代艺术家画布上的各种媒材的创作都囊括进来。

绘画是振奋人心的媒介，我希望这本书能阐明绘画的特点。尽管绘画有时受到摄影、视频、装置、雕塑以及行为艺术等媒介的冲击而偏离航线，但最终艺术家们总会回归绘画，因为其他的媒介都不能带来“用画笔在画面上涂抹、将颜料从颜料管中挤出”的体验，这类使用材料、凭借直观而创造图像的过程让人激动万分。

现在看来，绘画依然如同往昔那样广受欢迎，而旧有的等级差别很大程度上已毫无意义。我无意暗示所有的当代绘画活动都具有可以同往昔最优秀的传统画家一决高下的品质，但是，近年来的那些极具视觉丰富性的作品似乎既与过去有联系，又坚定地迈向了未来。

借助于公共收藏的知识，我试图尽可能将可查阅到的作品囊括进来。我花费了许多时间去走访这些原作，因为站在画作面前真切地观看是无可替代的。也没有任何时刻可以媲美那种当你感到画面正在向你诉说时的体验，这就是批评家珍妮特·温特森（Jeanette Winterson）在她的文集《艺术品：论狂喜与胆大妄为》（Art Objects, Essays on Ecstacy and Effrontery）［乔纳森海角出版社（Jonathan Cape），1995年］所描述的“这时我的心被洪流卷走了”。
