清代和民国时期，《幼学琼林》是流行最广的蒙学读本之一。当时在民间一直流传一句话：“读了《增广》会说话，读了《幼学》走天下。”毛泽东幼年读私塾时，对“四书”和“五经”不感兴趣，却对《幼学琼林》情有独钟，并且狠下了一番功夫，以至于几十年后他还能背出其中的许多段落。由此，足见《幼学琼林》的影响之大。
《幼学琼林全集》包括原文、注释、译文、解读四个部分。我们编写此书的过程中，参考了时下的一些权威版本，并做了大量的考辨工作。每一个典故尽量注明出处，并用简洁的白话表达出来，以方便低幼年的读者轻松阅读。

【译文】
淄水和渑水的味道不同，放在一起也可以分辨得出来；泾水清澈而渭水浑浊，即使二水合流后，、依然可以分辨出来。山泉的甘美使人快乐而忘记饥饿，所以隐居山林的人不愿意出山当官；情愿在自由恬静的东山高枕无忧，所以东晋的谢安多次谢绝朝廷的诏令，以求轻松悠闲。圣人出现在世间时，黄河的水也会变得清澈；太守为官廉洁清正，越王石就会显现于世。民俗淳朴的地方称为“仁里”，民俗恶劣的地方叫做“互乡”。到了“胜母里”这个地方，曾子说什么也不肯进去：到朝歌这个城市附近时，墨子就驾车而返。在田地里拍着土壤高歌，这是尧帝百姓自得其乐的盛世景象；在田地里耕地互相推让地界，这是周文王时百姓中盛行礼让之风。东汉的费长房有缩短两地距离之术；秦始皇让仙人作法，挥鞭驱赶石头造桥。尧帝在位的时候，有长达九年的洪水泛滥之患；商汤在位的时候，有长达七年的大旱之灾。商鞅不施仁义，让百姓把原来土地划分的标志去掉，实行士地私有；夏桀惨无人道，上天就让伊、洛二水同时枯竭。在路上看见他人的失物，也不会把它捡起来拿走，这是因为统治者治理有方的缘故；大海不起惊涛骇浪，国泰民安，由此可知中国境内有圣明的人治理。
【解读】在古代动荡年代，贤士们往往选择退隐，在山水田野里享受大自然的乐趣。谢安是其中的代表人物。谢安（320-385），字安石，号东山，东晋政治家，军事家，浙江绍兴人，祖籍陈郡阳夏（今河南省太康）。历任吴兴太守、侍中兼吏部尚书等职，死后追封太傅兼庐陵郡公。世称谢太傅、谢安石、谢相、谢公。他初与权臣周旋时，从不卑躬屈膝，不违背自己的准则却能拒权臣而扶社稷；等他自己当政的时候，又处处以大局为重，不结党营私，不仅调和了东晋内部矛盾，还于淝水之战击败前秦并北伐夺回了大片领土；而到他北伐胜利、正是功成名就之时，能急流勇退，不恋权位；因此被后世人视为良相的代表，“高洁”的典范。

《幼学琼林》，最初叫《幼学须知》，又称《成语考》、《故事寻源》、《幼学故事琼林》等。一般认为原著者是程登吉，字允升，明朝末年西昌人（今江西新建）；清朝嘉庆年间，邹圣脉作了一些增补注释，并且更名为《幼学琼林》，也叫《幼学故事琼林》。后来，民国时期费有容、叶浦荪和蔡东藩等又进行了增补。全书共分四卷。另外，清代广州聚贤堂版《幼学须知成语考》标明作者为“内阁邱文庄公”，邱文庄即明代的学者邱濬（1419—1495）。在目前无法作进一步考证的情况下，我们采用通行的说法，即认为程登吉为原著者。
