Introduction

《笠翁对韵》是出现于清代初期的一本儿童启蒙读物，与康熙年间车万育所编写的《声律启蒙》属于同一类型，以培养儿童学会对偶（也称“对仗”）和押韵为目的，相传其作者是清康熙年间的著名艺术家李渔，书名中的“笠翁”就是李渔的号，“对韵”指对偶和押韵。

李渔，字笠鸿，又号笠翁。又署笠道人、随庵主人、新亭樵客、湖上笠翁等。生于明万历三十九年（1611），卒于清康熙十九年（1680）。祖籍浙江兰溪，生长于江苏如皋。在明代崇祯年间中过秀才，但未能考中举人。人清后无意仕进，卖文为生。顺治八年（1651）移家杭州，与当时名流俊彦过往甚密，他的戏曲小说多作于此时。由于其文名渐大，后来又自组戏班从事演出，在社会上产生了较大的影响。他经常带戏班外出演出，足迹遍及大江南北，也获取了丰裕的资财。康熙元年（1662），李渔从杭州迁居金陵（今江苏南京），将寓所命名为“芥子园”，与此寓所一起，他还设有书铺，刊行了不少戏曲小说及其他杂著，著名的《芥子园画传》即其中一种。晚年又举家迂回杭州，但经济状况已大不如前，时常向友人求助，最终在穷困中离世。李渔是明末清初杰出的戏曲和小说作家，也是著名的戏曲理论家，其代表作有剧本《笠翁十种曲》、小说《无声戏》以及艺术理论著作《闲情偶寄》等。

对偶（对仗）和声韵是汉语两个重要的特色，这在古老的《诗经》中已经有所体现。发展到南朝的齐梁时期，文人们已经发现了声韵和对偶的规则，并自觉地运用到诗文的创作中。随着格律诗（即近体诗或今体诗）在盛唐时期的完全定型，熟悉声韵和对偶成为吟诗作赋的前提。而在古代的科举考试中，不管是诗赋还是八股文，对声韵和对偶的要求都十分严格，因此熟练掌握这方面的知识和技巧对于古代读书人来说是极为重要的，是必须具备的基础技能。古代的童蒙教育对声韵和属对（俗称对对子）十分重视，从元代开始就出现了这方面的启蒙读物，目的在于让学生分清字的平仄，学会对仗，并记住韵部，为将来作诗文打好基础。这类读物中，出现于清初的《声律启蒙》和《笠翁对韵》是最为有名的。

《笠翁对韵》与《声律启蒙》在体例上基本相同，都是按照《平水韵》平声三十韵分部编写。《平水韵》是古代韵书，南宋原籍山西平水人刘渊，在著《壬子新刊礼部韵略》时将隋朝陆法言的《切韵》（分平上去人206韵）进行合并，分为107韵，同期山西平水官员金人王文郁著《平水新刊韵略》，分为106韵，二者基本相同（106韵和107韵的区别只在于上声的“拯”“迥”两部合并与否），这就是后来广为流传的“平水韵”。“平水韵”虽然南宋时才出现，但它反映了唐宋时期人们作诗用韵的实际发音状况。后世诗人作格律诗，也一直沿用这种分法。古代韵书选取每一个韵部的第一个字作为这个韵部的代表字，以便于称谓，如“一东”指平声第一部，“东”是这个韵部的代表字，与“东”韵母相同的字都归属于这一韵部。格律诗一般押平声韵，很少押仄声韵，更不能平仄互押。《平水韵》把平声字分为上下两卷，称为上平声、下平声，共三十部。这三十部中的字的归属是古代文人必须熟悉的。
