1.1 引言
20世纪，世界城市结构正经历着历史性的转变，这种转变确实发生在我们身边，却又难以把握，转变的核心在于信息技术控制下的技术革命。基础设施建设以新技术为基础，经济与通信的全球化改变了我们的生产、消费、管理、信息发布及思考方式。然而，并非每种经济或文化活动都需要全球化。事实上，按照这些活动的参与人数来看，大多数活动首先是地区性或地域性的。然而，任何具有战略主导地位的活动，无论是金融市场还是信息的视听传输，其决策与交流网络的组织实施无一不是全球化的行为。这个世界的独立性是不对称的，而这种不对称的独立性通过新信息与通讯技术展现出来，并无时无刻不存在于我们现存的时代之中。这种现象在历史上是前所未有的，它实际上开辟了新的人类历史时期——信息时代。
城市化使城市及其市民共同经历着其内部结构性的转变。实际上，我们经历着历史上速度最快、波及面最广的城市化过程（图1.1）。在短短几年内，世界上大多数居民成为城市人口，而且绝大多数的城市人口在城市定居，或在迅速发展中的乡村定居。正如经济决定论者预言的那样，无线电通讯技术并不会降低城市的中心地位；相反，它使空间距离遥远的城市与乡村地区可以统一管理，使它们交流更加方便，从而使人口向区域内聚集，一些显著的、具有历史阶段性的社会空间被中断，这点我们将在本书中有所陈述。从这种意义上来讲，人类命运与城市尤其是大都市息息相关。
