“湛蓝的夜空星罗棋布，而人生的烦恼恰似那星汉无数”，这就是我妈妈当年含泪吟唱的《阿里郎》中的一段歌词。妈妈的一生充满坎坷，烦恼无时不在。享年80岁的妈妈可说是饱尝了人间的艰辛，晚年往往是在回顾其昔日的苦涩生涯中入睡的。
如今回想起来，妈妈当年所面对的烦恼，真可说是苦海无边。也许妈妈活出了其人生价值，因为在我看来，妈妈虽然终生烦恼缠身，她却始终没有认为生命是乏味的。
精神病学家维克多·弗兰克①曾前往强制收容所体验生活。他在其著作中如此写道：“从价值的角度来看，苦恼人无疑要高于‘玻璃玫瑰’，苦恼人的价值也高于有用的人。”每每读到体验过艰难困苦的弗兰克的这一论述，我都会想起妈妈。正由于体验过艰难困苦，要活下去的意志就更加坚定。就这一意义而言，也许妈妈又是幸运的。至少妈妈那一代人没有丢掉传统习惯和信念，虽苦不堪言，却始终没有停止仰望星空。
但如今却很难再看到这样的传统和信念的余韵了。不仅是烦恼重重，似乎星星也不再闪耀了。烦恼或日苦恼，除了“灾难”以外没有任何意义，也与价值毫无关系。
事实确实如此吗？“烦恼的人”或“苦恼的人”是否就只是运气欠佳呢？
本书将以文学家夏目漱石和社会学家马克斯·韦伯的相关论述为经纬，来思考我们每个人都具有的“烦恼力”，也就是鼓励我们生存下去的动力这一问题。
为什么我要引用夏目漱石和马克斯·韦伯的论识而言，必须说他们是完美无缺的。”
因此，夏目漱石也好，韦伯也好，都认为时代潮流是无法抗拒的。借用韦伯的话说，“从有所了解的树上摘果实吃的人，是不可能再现了”。
本书第二章曾提及夏目漱石的英国留学生涯，对他来说留学生活一点也不快乐。因为他从这个被日本视为样板的“发达国家”中，根本没有发现日本未来的方向。而且，他还认为没有比英国人更糟糕的国民了。
尽管如此，他意识到日本早晚也会步英国的后尘。因此，他在题为《现代日本的开化》的演讲中如此评价日本的西化：“当今日本的开化是表面肤浅的开化，但也只能忍气吞声地走这条道路。”
在《梦十夜》这部小说中，夏目漱石叙述了他的10个怪梦，其中最有代表性的是第七天夜里做的梦。在这个梦里，讲了一个乘船的人。
这个人不知道自己怎么坐上了一艘大客轮，也不知道这艘船载着自己驶向何方。这艘船只是不断地超越前面的船只，似乎是要追赶上正前方不断下沉的夕阳。于是，此人问船老大船将驶向哪里，却没有得到答复。船上的乘客几乎都是外国人。
