词典告诉人们鸡蛋和面粉是什么，但不会告诉人们怎样烤蛋糕。要想知道怎样烤蛋糕，你得查食谱。
食谱只不过是人们依赖的众多操作工序说明书中的一个范本。家庭维护书籍和汽车修理手册是另外两个普通的范本。操作工序说明书告诉我们完成一项任务的步骤。当我们熟悉某项任务后，我们就无须使用操作工序说明书——我们可以依赖记忆来完成任务。例如，几乎没有人每天早上穿衣服需要操作工序说明书。
大脑像操作工序说明书一样储存日常事件信息的吗？罗格·尚克和罗伯特·埃贝森认为，人们使用心理脚本表示情境，如去餐馆。脚本是在特定情境下发生的典型事件的序列。例如，去餐馆的脚本可以是：走进餐馆、选择餐桌、坐下、拿菜单、点菜、边等边聊、服务员上菜、边吃边聊、收单、买单、离开。
很明显，并非所有的餐馆都是这样的。有的餐馆会要求你先付钱再吃饭。脚本并不肯定地告诉你会发生什么事，但肯定会告诉你在大多数情况下很可能会发生什么事。
脚本也能帮助人们更有效地交流。你如果问某人昨晚干了什么，而且他的回答是“我去了餐馆”的话，你的餐馆脚本将会让你知道那人经历的一些事件。
例如，如果你去过医院，你也许就有“看医生”的脚本，通过脚本你就大体知道看医生会发生些什么事。
你如果从未看过牙医，你就没有“看牙医”的脚本，也就不知道看牙医会发生什么事。“看医生”的脚本也许没什么帮助，因为你现在是在看牙医。
然而，我们对事件的期待很可能比脚本更广泛。
我们看任何保健专家时，我们期待的步骤会有很多。
这些步骤包括预约、描述症状和接受治疗。如果我们看过医生，即使没看过牙医，在去牙医办公室的路上，也许我们能猜测出将会发生的事情。当然，人们对一些事件具有共同的知识，如去餐馆。
