Book Abstract

从完整的意义上讲它并不构成鲜明的性格。它看似给了这个人一种强劲的意志力，以影响其主导感情目标的各种因素；但是，从完整意义上讲，他并不拥有强有力的意志和性格，而只是有一些可称之为专门性格的东西。只要遇到与他的主导感情毫无联系的目标和情境，或者主导感情的目标最终离他而去，那么这样的人就可能表现出可悲可叹的弱点，或缺乏意志和性格。事实上，没法说他具有强有力的意志或发挥着意志影响；他的主导感情在他身上引起的动机非常强烈，在与其目标有关的各种情境中，几乎都不会出现动机冲突和深思熟虑，意志是多余的。然而在其他情境中他却没有意志。
只有一种感情通过变成主导感情，能形成真正的鲜明性格，那就是自我感情。这种感情有一种低级的不完美的形式，即雄心或对名誉的爱，也就是要让公众承认自己是一个有这种或那种能力或权力的人。当这种感情变成主导感情时，它差不多可以涵盖行为的所有方面，并为差不多每一种情境都提供一种源于自我感情的支配性动机，决定我们所定义的严格意义上的意志。但它并不就是一种道德感情；虽然它可以形成性格，可是由此形成的性格却不是道德性格。
强有力的自我感情要形成完整意义上的道德性格，就必须与对某些行为理想寄予的感情相融合，并且，它必须摆脱对公众看法的依赖性。由这种主导感情引发的动机要想服务于理想，就必须有一种习惯优势。正像詹姆斯教授描述的那样，虽然有些人拥有这种感情和正确的理想，但是，那些飘逸的、未经组织的愿望却在他们身上反复地证明，它们比起试图克服它们的意志更为有力。他们缺乏性格中的第二个关键因素，即自我控制习惯，也就是对自我感情的习惯性支配。或许是因为作为自尊的主要基础的先天意向生来就缺乏力量；或许是他们从没能认识到习惯的强劲力量，而只满足于说，“现在我不会白找麻烦去抗拒这种愿望，压制这种冲动；我知道，如果我真的发挥意志力，我也能这么做。”每当出现这种情况，相对于未经组织的愿望的力量，意志的力量就被削弱了；而当自我感情控制了来自其他方面的冲动时，它就会由于习惯而变得更有控制力——就如我们所说的，意志得到了加强。并且，这种主导感情的习惯性支配或许在经历很多冲突之后建立起来了，这时它就能很确定、很容易地决定每一个冲突的问题，结果冲突几乎就不再发生了；它为每一个可能的情境都提供一个支配性的动机——我（自我）应该做好事的愿望。所以，这种动机为个人在每天的各种动机冲突中不断地赢得胜利，它获得了一种固定习惯的、不可抗拒的力量。

Introduction

麦独孤（W.1liamMcDOLtgall，1871-1938），英国裔美国心理学家。他是西方社会心理学的创始人之一，也是西方现代心理学流派——策动心理学或目的心理学的主要代表者和发言人，毕生致力于用本能来解释社会行为。一般地，人们把1908年麦独孤和罗斯（E.A.Ross）出版的《社会心理学导论》、《社会心理学：大纲和资料集》两书，作为社会心理学成为一门独立学科诞生的标志。虽然麦独孤的本能论社会心理学从提出伊始，一直成为众多心理学家批评的靶子，但麦独孤对社会心理学的重要贡献，无疑是不可抹煞的。特别是20世纪初叶，本能作为一种对社会行为的解释，大大促进了社会心理学的繁荣和发展。当时的一些社会科学家和社会心理学家都以麦独孤的本能心理学作为阐释人类社会行为的根据。甚至后来的心理学大家，如桑代克（E.L.Thotradike）、杜威（J.Dewey）都曾支持过麦独孤的本能论，从中汲取营养，并明确宣称，人类的社会心理与本能有密切关系。此外，麦独孤关于社会情境下个体的社会心理与社会行为的观点，以及有关道德发展、情操意志的论述，对后来的心理学家如皮亚杰（J.，Piaget）等都有深刻影响。心理学理论家查普林等（J.P.（2haplin，eta1）对此做了恰如其分的评价：麦独孤的论述受到他同时代人过于宽厚的对待，而又受到历史过于严峻考验！
