在20世纪60年代的美国南部，关于种族歧视的讨论激战正酣，事情的导火索是由于亚拉巴马州的罗莎·帕克斯（Rosa Parks）拒绝在实行种族隔离政策的公交车上为白人让座（种族隔离政策规定，白人上车时，黑人必须为白人让座，白人坐在公交车的前面，黑人坐在公交车的后面。——译者注）。这一事件引发了关于种族隔离的大辩论，人们纷纷讨论“在什么地方仍然在实行种族隔离政策”。马丁·路德·金和马尔科姆·X的激情演讲震动了整个南部，而种族隔离制度在学校的废除也指日可待。法庭上关于种族歧视的争论蔓延到了街角，一场猛烈的变革不可避免。
