朵拉·卡尔夫（Dora M. Kalff）女士是沙盘游戏疗法的创立者。《沙游在心理治疗中的作用》一书是卡尔夫一生中最为重要的作品。通过九个沙盘游戏案例的呈现，作者较为系统地阐述了她对沙盘游戏疗法理论与技术的理解。
“何种形式的沟通媒介对儿童更有吸引力？何种形式的沟通媒介对儿童的心理问题更为有效？对儿童的心理发展更为适宜？”这是众多儿童咨询临床工作者在实践工作中经常感到困扰的问题，正是临床实践中提出的这一问题，促使英国的儿科医生玛格丽特·洛温菲尔德（Margaret Lowenfeld）对世界技术（The World Technique）进行了卓越的探索。卡尔夫受到洛温菲尔德的启发，进而创立了沙盘游戏疗法。现如今，沙盘游戏疗法不仅应用于儿童的心理辅导与咨询工作，而且也广泛应用于成人的心理咨询与分析之中。不仅作为心理咨询与分析的方法，而且作为心理教育的有效形式，沙盘游戏疗法在发展想象力与创造力方面也发挥着重要作用。沙盘游戏疗法已经跨越欧洲与美国，流行于中国与日本等国家和地区，成为一种在世界范围普遍采用的心理咨询与分析方法。

除了“自由与受保护的空间”，意象也是需要我们关注的关键词。沙盘游戏疗法也称为非言语疗法。前任国际沙盘游戏治疗学会主席Ruth Amman表示：“情绪和情感被掩藏得越深，就越远离我们的意识记忆和人格主体，我们也越难找到语言去表达它们。”iii马丁·卡尔夫(Martin Kalff)表示，然而这却“能够通过沙盘中的游戏性创造得以表达。”iv意象便是其表达“语言”，通过意象的象征性表达，我们接近来访者的无意识内心世界，通过原型意象而理解感受原型。书中所呈现的系列沙盘意象令读者一饱眼福的同时，也可深切的感受意象表达的治疗作用。
沙盘游戏疗法以荣格分析心理学为理论基础，系列沙盘游戏过程反映了荣格所描绘的“自性化过程”。而且沙盘游戏意象呈现之后，一般不做即时的解释，延迟解释（Delayed Interpretation）也是一个原则。以上正是国际沙盘游戏治疗学会的创始会员Kay Bradway 所强调的卡尔夫创立的沙盘游戏疗法与其他使用沙子、水以及模具进行工作的方法的重要区别。v此书的个案呈现了“正宗”的原汁原味的沙盘游戏疗法该如何进行，通过阅读，读者对自己在现实之中遇到的诸多困惑都可能迎刃而解。
2003年我开始学习沙盘游戏疗法，其后一直进行沙盘游戏疗法的研究与实践，卡尔夫的著作一直是我的重要参考资料，每次阅读都有新的感受和体会。原来阅读的是根据德文版本翻译的英文版本，以及根据英文版本翻译而来的中文版本。本次由“万千心理”翻译出版的版本是根据德文版本直接翻译为中文，能够在更大的程度上展现原书的神韵。作为一名沙盘游戏疗法的学习者与实践者，在这静穆欢欣的平安夜，我心怀感恩地记下一点儿我阅读此书的感想，希望更多的读者能够在阅读此书中有所获益。
