一、西洋参的来源、历史和现状
（一）西洋参的身
西洋参为五加科植物西洋参Radix Panacis Quin-quefolii的干燥根，其中Panacis的希腊文原意为“万灵之药”。它与中国人参同属五加科，但不同种。西洋参原产于美国和加拿大，未被发现和利用前，野生于大西洋沿岸北美洲的丛林中。
1701年，法国耶稣会教士杜德美（P.Jartoux，1668—1720）来华传教，受到中国人参热的感染，对我国根似人形的神草——人参产生浓厚兴趣，详细考察了我国人参的形态、特征及应用，并认为人参的确是一种灵丹妙药。1708年，杜德美受清廷之命绘制中国地图，去东北考察，在距离边界的一个村子里见到了当地人采集的新鲜人参，依原样大小画图。1711年4月12日，他给传教会会长写信，附上了他绘制的人参图，详细介绍了人参产地、形态、生长状况和采集方法，并且推测在地理相似的别的地方也有可能发现人参：人参产地“大致位于北纬39～47度之间，东经10～20度（以北京子午线为基准）之”间。“……这一切使我认为，若世界上还有某个国家生长此种植物，这个国家恐怕是加拿大。因为据在那里生活过的人们所述，那里的森林、山脉与此地的颇为相似。”这是人参第一次被详细介绍给西方世界。这封信发表后，影响很大。另一位法国耶稣会教士拉菲托（Joseph—Francois Lafitau）在加拿太魁北克传教，1716年他读了杜德美的信后，意识到他所在的魁北克正是杜德美预言可能发现人参的地方。拉菲托拿了人参绘图给当地印第安人看，他们立即认出是一种他们叫做“嘎兰特区恩”（garantoquen）的草药。大多数北美印第安部落很早就已把它当药用，不过用法各不相同，用于治疗头疼、创伤、不孕等等，但没有像中国人那样把它当成灵丹妙药。
