99％水溶性气体被鼻黏膜黏液毯的水溶解而留在鼻黏膜，如二氧化硫、甲醛、臭氧等具有强烈刺激性的气体基本被鼻黏膜黏液毯溶解而不能到达下呼吸道，但接触时间长了会影响纤毛运动而降低鼻黏膜的防御功能。当吸入异物颗粒或刺激性气体时，常常会打喷嚏将异物排出，这是保护性反射——喷嚏反射，可清除吸入鼻腔的有害物质或刺激性气体。
（2）鼻黏膜纤毛黏液清除系统的作用：鼻黏膜的清洁作用主要由纤毛黏液清除系统完成。该系统由鼻黏膜纤毛上皮细胞和其表面的黏液毯组成，将黏液毯比喻为湖泊中的水，纤毛就像生长于湖泊中的芦苇，水面淹没芦苇顶端。纤毛上皮细胞的纤毛不断向后摆动，推动黏液毯向鼻咽部移动，将黏附于黏液上的微细尘粒、细菌、真菌及其他抗原物质推送到鼻咽部排出。
①黏液毯。在纤毛表面覆盖一层黏液，即黏液毯。其分为上、下两层，上层为凝胶层，黏液黏稠，有利于黏附尘粒、细菌等有害物质；下层为溶胶层，较为稀薄，有利于纤毛摆动。黏液主要成分为无机盐、黏多糖、黏蛋白、清蛋白、蛋白水解酶、中性内肽酶、溶菌酶、免疫球蛋白（IgG、IgA、IgE）、抗微生物多肽（防御素）、细胞因子和95％的水，由上皮层中杯状细胞和黏膜下浆液腺、黏液腺分泌产生。其中，溶菌酶、乳铁蛋白、蛋白分解酶、抗微生物多肽（防御素）等能够抑制和杀灭鼻黏膜表面的细菌等微生物。
