儿童支气管哮喘（bronchial asthma）是当今世界受到高度关注的一种慢性呼吸道疾病。根据世界卫生组织（WHO）最新发布的《哮喘全球负担》估计，世界范围内有超过3亿人罹患哮喘，预计到2025年，哮喘将额外增加1亿人左右，中国哮喘患者已达2000万。全国儿科哮喘协作组在1990年和2000年进行的两次儿童哮喘流行病学调查结果显示：我国0～14岁儿童哮喘患病率由1990年的0．9％上升到2000年的1．5％，增加764．8％，表明哮喘发病率呈较快增长趋势。哮喘给儿童及其家庭以及社会造成严重的经济和精神负担。我国卫生部、科技部把儿童支气管哮喘列为首个进入社区重点防治的儿童慢性疾病，列为国家2008年科技支撑计划课题“社区儿童哮喘预防与控制适宜技术研究”进行研究，体现了国家对儿童哮喘这一慢性疾病的高度重视。
儿童哮喘病因十分复杂，既有遗传因素，又有环境因素。多种致病因素导致呼吸道慢性变异性炎症，气道高反应性是哮喘疾病的特征。该病发病年龄早，约80％始子3岁之前，约50％始于1岁之前，由于有易于反复频繁发作与急性加重两大特点，常常造成患儿急诊、输液、住院、缺课、家长旷工，重症发作可引起死亡。平时运动受限，夜间睡眠不良，生活质量大大降低，肺功能受损，到成人因不可逆气道重塑，可致肺气肿、肺心病、劳动力丧失，该病对儿童甚至人类的健康均构成极大的威胁。
