“我们必须为顾客提供可靠的质量。我们故意落后尖端技术一两年,好让我们的主要客户催促我们,然后我们才为客户开发出可靠的产品。”DEC的高管在接受《追求卓越》作者的访谈时,曾这样介绍公司的战略。
DEC在另外一个场合也介绍过自己的理念: “我们主要的目标不是追求成长,而是成为高质量的企业,从事高质量的工作,这就是说我们对本身的工作和未来的产品感到自豪。只要能够达到高质量的目标,成长自然会随之而来.” “一款优秀的产品能够把自己卖出去。”奥森曾这样说过。
一位市场分析人士称: “DEC依赖顾客为小型计算机找出用途,而不是由公司耗费巨资自行开发、推销这些产品。DEC的销售人员、工程师把产品卖给其他公司的工程人员,和顾客建立起稳固持久的关系……令人惊讶的是,DEC的成长大多不是靠自己的力量,多年来,他们都是跟着顾客提出的有趣构想走。”
但随着技术的发展,购买计算机的消费群也发生了变化。计算机的消费主体从工程师及专业人员扩展到普通人群,比小型机更小的PC应运而生。在PC时代展开的初期,奥森敌视PC,认为PC在商业上将会栽跟头,称“没有理由让所有人在家里拥有一台计算机”。
在奥森眼里,初生的PC乳臭未干,只有简陋的结构、低端的处理器和粗糙的操作系统,与之相比,DEC的小型机像五项全能冠军,从操作系统、处理器到配件,无一不是经过时间锤炼的精品。他曾在《波士顿环球》上将PC描述为便宜的、短命的、粗糙的产物。英特尔联合创始人安迪·格鲁夫讥讽他这是“卓别林式的嘲笑”。
即使后来,当老对手IBM后来也推出PC时,奥森仍迟迟不动。当DEC员工买回一台IBM PC做样机分析时,奧森把它仔仔细细地看了一遍,然后不屑地说如果是你们造出这样的货色,那就会走人。麻省理工学院斯隆管理学院名誉教授埃德加.施恩评价:“人们需要更简单、更便宜的PC,DEC却仍在面向技术市场生产复杂设备。”
