《数字媒体技术概论》：
渲染是来自于中国画中的渲和染这两个烘托画面形象的技巧，也被称为晕染，指用水墨或颜色烘托物象，分出阴阳向背，属辅助性用笔。渲染用于建筑效果图上同样是为烘托建筑的色彩、造型及环境效果。电脑中的渲染是对模型所赋予的材质，配置各种不同灯光进行着色计算，模拟现实生活中的各种视觉现象的技术。现实生活中，无论是建筑物、设备、设施、人物等人们眼睛所看到的物体，都是具有几何形状、色彩、材质的基本物理属性，这些属性又都与光线有着直接的关系，没有光照，眼睛就得不到客观事物的真实展示。电脑制作的各种动画片、虚拟环境、装饰效果图等，都是通过赋予的材质、色彩、光照后进行渲染计算所获得的图片效果。一般情况下，一、两次的渲染是难以看出效果或难以满足整体效果的，需要多次修改灯光的布置、强度、色温等参数，同时也要调整物体表面的材质才能最终取得满意的效果。
在计算机图形学中，主要存在三种渲染技术：Z缓冲技术，光线跟踪技术和辐射度技术。这三种技术各自拥有数量庞大的具体实现方法。其中Z缓冲技术主要使用于实时绘制领域，而光线跟踪技术和辐射度技术主要使用于真实感渲染领域。
在图形流水线中，渲染是最后一项重要步骤，通过它得到模型与动画的最终显示效果。在早期的发展阶段，由于计算机硬件能力的限制，主要的研究方向集中在如何简化物理数学模型以使计算机生成计算量不过于庞大而效果又可被接受的图形。随着硬件能力的提升，科学家和研究者开始把重心集中到如何创建出真实可信的图形上来。
