机器人是一种自动化的机器，这种机器具备一些与人或生物相似的智能能力，如感知能力、规划能力、动作能力和协同能力，是一种具有高度灵活性的自动化机器。工业机器人是集机械、电子、控制、计算机、传感器、人工智能等多学科先进技术于一体的现代制造业重要的自动化装备。自从1962年美国研制出世界上台工业机器人以来，机器人技术及其产品发展很快，已成为柔性制造系统（FMS）、自动化工厂（FA）、计算机集成制造系统（CIMS）的自动化工具。在工业、建筑业等领域中均有重要用途。机器人技术已从传统的工业领域快速扩展到其他领域，如物流、农业、家政服务、医疗康复、军事、外星探索、勘测勘探等。而论是传统的工业领域还是其他领域，对机器人性能要求的不断提高，使机器人必须面对更极端的环境、完成更复杂的任务。因而，社会经济的发展也为机器人技术进步提供了新的动力。机器人是自动控制有说服力的成就，是当代高意义上的自动化。机器人技术综合了多学科的发展成果，代表了高技术的发展前沿。21世纪以来，国内外对机器人技术的发展越来越重视，机器人技术是对未来新兴产业发展具有重要意义的高技术之一。欧盟在第七框架计划(FP7)中规划了“认知系统与机器人技术”研究，美国启动了“美国国家机器人计划”，日本、韩国在服务型机器人方面也制定了相应的研究计划。我国在国家高技术研究发展计划(863计划)、国家自然科学基金、国家科技重大专项等规划中对机器人技术研究给予极大的重视，国内外产业界对机器人技术引领未来产业发展也寄予厚望，由此可见，机器人技术是未来高技术、新兴产业发展的基础之一，对于国民经济和国防建设具有重要意义。
机器人驱动装置是驱使执行机构运动的机构，按照控制系统发出的指令信号，借助于动力元件使机器人进行动作。它输入的是电信号，输出的是线、角位移量。机器人使用的驱动装置主要是电力驱动装置，如步进电动机、伺服电动机等，也有采用液压、气动等驱动装置。
机器人控制技术是使机器人完成各种任务和动作的各种控制手段。作为系统中的关键技术，机器人控制技术包括范围十分广泛，从机器人智能、任务描述到运动控制和伺服控制等技术。既包括实现控制所需的各种硬件系统，又包括各种软件系统。机器人有两种控制方式，一种是集中式控制，即机器人的全部控制由一台微型计算机完成。另一种是分散（级）式控制，即采用多台微机来分担机器人的控制，如当采用上、下两级微机共同完成机器人的控制时，主机常用于负责系统的管理、通信、运动学和动力学计算，并向下级微机发送指令信息；作为下级从机，各关节分别对应一个CPU，进行插补运算和伺服控制处理，实现给定的运动，并向主机反馈信息。根据作业任务要求的不同，机器人的控制方式又可分为点位控制、连续轨迹控制和力（力矩）控制。
