Book Abstract

致中国读者我和我的丈夫1980年来过中国，当时是为帮助刘易斯·W. 海因（Lewis W. Hine）举办个人作品展，这位著名的美国摄影师曾对20世纪前30年美国劳工的劳动条件给予了极大的关注。作为中国政府邀请的客人，我们参观了北京、上海、济南和广州，考察展览场地的同时，也谈论美国和欧洲的摄影。我们随身携带了许多幻灯片，以便向对摄影感兴趣的人们介绍欧美摄影师的作品，其中大量影像是他们前所未见的。如今，30多年过去了，我又回到了中国，这一次是以书的形式向中国朋友介绍摄影。在亲身前往中国之前，我鲜见中国摄影师的作品，但在中国停留期间，我参观了几个摄影展，并结识了一些热衷了解世界各地摄影发展状况的中国摄影师。此后的30余年，我能感到摄影在中国引发了越来越浓厚的兴趣，许多照片出现在各种展览、摄影杂志，以及我有幸收到的精美图书中。 1980年，我开始了本书的撰写工作，计划囊括世界各地的摄影作品，包括欧美知名摄影师的作品。这也是我和我的出版商将此书命名为《世界摄影史》的原因。这本书已经被翻译成了法语、波兰语、日语和现在的中文。我始终抱有这样的期望，即无论我的读者身在何处，当读到这本书时，都会从中了解摄影服务于社会的方方面面。照片能够让人们意识到恶劣的社会情形，促使大家去改变；照片能记录下恐怖或精彩的事件，并通过辅助文字说明告知世人当今的世界。照片能宣传产品也能彰显个性。照片在赞美大自然美妙风光的同时，也描绘出现代生活对大自然造成的破坏。在照片作为一种媒介的发展历程中，我们还可以看到许多摄影师不断努力创造艺术性的照片，以唤起观众的审美情感。在我看来，最有力度的照片往往通过某种最佳方式融合了信息与情感，让观众能不厌其烦地欣赏它，毫无视觉和情感上的疲劳。在这一点上，这样的照片，无论其主题如何，就其艺术性而言，均可与绘画艺术等观。我衷心希望中文版《世界摄影史》的读者能够全方位地了解摄影，并从短暂历史涌现的丰富影像中获得享受。
