Author Description

蒋维乔（1873-1958），教育家、哲学家、佛学家、养生家。字竹庄，自号因是子。江苏武进人。经过科举考试入常州府学。光绪21年先后入江阴南菁书院和常州致用精舍继续深造，弃八股文，研究西学。

Book Abstract

《因是子静坐法》：
全身之重心人生之根本在脐，吾即言之矣，古之有道之士，盖早知之，故有修养丹田之法。丹田者，亦名气海，在脐下腹部是也。顾吾之为是书，意在发挥平素之心得，以论理地记述之，绝不愿参以道家铅汞之说，故不取向者丹田之名称，而名之日重心。物理学之公例，凡物重心定则安；重心偏则倾：百尺之塔，凌云之阁，巍然独峙而不倚者何故?日惟循重心之公例故。
悲哉世俗之人，不知反求其根本，而安定其重心；终日蝇营，神明憧扰，致心性失其和平，官骸不能从令，疾病灾厄，于焉乘之，殊可悯已。静坐之法，浅言之，乃凝集吾之心意，注于重心之一点，使之安定。行持既久，由勉强几于自然，于是全身细胞，悉皆听命，烦恼不生，悦怿无量。儒家之主静，‘老氏之抱一，佛家之禅观，命名各异，究其实，罔非求重心之安定而己。
静坐与生理的关系人体之构造，复杂精妙，实有不可思议者。今日科学虽发达，于此学尚只窥其途径，未能造其极也。
请就生理学上言之：吾人全体机关之最大作用，首在生活。即摄取体外之滋养质，供给于体内各机关；排泄体内之废料于体外而己；是名新陈代谢。新陈代谢之作用，无一息停止；司其枢纽者，厥惟循环器。循环器，包括心脏、脉管、淋巴腺而言。所以运行血液于全身，循环不已者也。心脏有四房，为发血器官；脉管有动脉、有静脉；淋巴腺遍布全身，与静脉并行；一面吸收营养物，输送于动脉管；一面摄取老废物，达于静脉管。血液之循环，全恃呼吸；呼出碳酸气，吸进氧气，使静脉中紫血，变为红血输入动脉。此循环约二十四秒时，全体一周；一昼夜三干六百周。
吾人呼吸次数，一昼夜二万余次；所吸清气，共三百八十余方尺；每人体中血液，平均以二升五合计。所澄之血，有一万五千余斤；如此伟大之工作，吾人初不自觉也。运行之速如此。若呼吸合法，血液无阻滞，则身体健康；一有阻滞，则各机关受其病；各机关或有损伤，亦能使血液阻滞而生病。
血液停滞，百病遂生。其原因有种种：（1）呼吸不合法，不能尽吸氧吐碳之功用。
（2）常人全身血量，半储于腹部；腹力不紧，恒多郁血，使他部失调。
（3）内脏器官，属交感神经所管辖，不能直接达于大脑，在生理学上谓之不随意筋；言其作用，虽在人之睡卧时，全身静止，亦不稍停，不能以人之心意左右之；故其阻滞而病，人每不及预防。
（4）心脏跳动时，于动脉之发血接近而有力；至静脉管，则自头部及四肢，回血入心，心脏跳动之力，所及甚微，故亦易停滞。
人身有肉体与精神两方面，而其不可思议处，多在精神方面，此宗教及哲学所由起也。持极端惟物论者，则谓吾人心意之作用，不过有生以来经验之迹象，印于脑中者，恒随肉体以俱尽，殆不承认有精神界：持极端惟心论者反，谓世界一切，皆由心造，无心则无物；是皆陷于一偏之见。究之心身两方面，不可偏废，而心意尤能影响于肉体。概而论之，其例实多：愧耻内蕴，则颜为之赤；沉愁终夜，则发为之白；此精神之影响于形体一也。愉快时则五官之所见所闻皆美，悲哀时则否；此精神之影响于形体二也。
