亚伯拉罕·林肯在信封背面写下《葛底斯堡演说》？
1863年，美国内战期间爆发了葛底斯堡之战。4个月后，人们为在这场战役中牺牲的将士们举行了葬礼。马萨诸塞州演说家爱德华·埃弗里特（Edward Everett）应邀出席发表演说。直到最后一刻，美国总统林肯才得到邀请。让大家惊讶的是，总统不仅同意出席，还主动提出要说几句。
有这么一种说法，林肯在去葬礼的途中，在一个信封背面潦草地写下他的演讲稿。《牛津美国历史指南》一书认为这是大家"虚构出来的故事"，而大家之所以相信这一说法，是因为"在林肯简短的演讲（为时三分钟）之前，埃弗里特已经讲了两小时"。
大卫·J. 艾彻（David J. Eicher）在《葛底斯堡战场》（Gettysburg Battlefield）一书中也认为，林肯的演讲稿"不是在路上写的，也不是在一个信封上写的"。的确，艾彻表示"林肯手上共有5份副本"，但没有一份是写在信封背面的。他说林肯"在华盛顿就拟好了演讲稿的初稿"。
