Content Description

这本科学家撰写的散文杰作，收集了古尔德在《自然史》杂志上发表的科学随想。作者在哈佛大学教生物学，是科学内行，又有历史家的眼光。他提出了一个问题：达尔文在确立了进化论之后，为什么迟了20年才发表？古尔德说，这是因为他清楚进化论的含义比一般人所意识到的更为离经叛道。然而自达尔文以来，进化论已经发展了快二百年，可许多人仍然对进化论一无所知。大家不知道进化这个概念在开始就是误用的。达尔文自己并不用这个概念，他只是在《物种起源》的*后一段才用到这个词，而且是作为权宜性对比才这样用的，他自己的用法是“经过改变的继承（descent with modification）” 。自然选择本身就是对环境的适应，并没有从低到高的方向性，并不代表进步。从“经过改变的继承”到进化，人们保留了人类的中心地位，保留了世界观（进化论*初是为了与关于上帝的信仰相协调，后来它取代了上帝），不过却离大师本人的思想越来越远。

错综复杂的学术争论，扑朔迷离的历史往事，都因古尔德的生花妙笔跃然纸上。

Author Description

斯蒂芬·杰·古尔德（Stephen Jay Gould，1941~2002），是当今世界上的进化论者、古生物学家、科学史学家和科学散文作家。他和埃尔德里奇(Niles Eldredge)在1972年共同提出间断平衡学说，对达尔文学说进行了修正。在他的著作《个体发生和种系发生》(1977)、《人智的错误量度》(1981)、《时间之箭、时间之环》(1987)和《奇妙的生命》(1989)等书中，他论述了进化生物学、智力测验、地质学和古生物学等学科发展史中各种争论的来龙去脉及其意义。从1974年起，古尔德定期为《自然史》杂志撰稿，这些稿件已经收集成几个集子，包括《自达尔文以来》(1977)、《熊猫的拇指》(1980)、《母鸡的牙齿和马的脚趾》(1983)等。他的科学文章文风典雅，通俗易懂。
