從那晚之後，片岡經常來向我借房間。
「你偶而也該帶她上上賓館吧？」我說。
片岡故意誇張地皺起眉頭，說道：
「這你就不懂了，女人是一種很容易得寸進尺的生物，只要我帶她上一次賓館，以後她就會把上賓館視為理所當然了。反正我帶廣江上你的房間，她也沒有怨言，還是維持老樣子吧。」
「她知道那是誰的房間嗎？」
「我跟她說，那是我的備用房間，有需要就會去那裡住。所以有時我遇上臨時要加班時，我會把鑰匙給她，叫她先在房間裡等我。不過你放心，我再三提醒過她，別亂碰房間裡的東西。」

我一邊說，一邊在小便斗前上下搖晃下半身。

從我開始出借房間到現在，轉眼已過了三個月。這一天，我一如往昔在便利商店的停車場迎接了一天的早晨。昨晚的房客是片岡。前天是本田，大前天是中山。生意接二連三上門，讓我整整有三天沒辦法睡在自己的床上。
我一邊揉著睡眠不足的惺忪雙眼，一邊開車回到公寓，打開了房間的門。房間裡的空氣也一如往昔異常溫熱，我心裡正想著一大清早就「辦事」真是辛苦，但旋即發現那是因為暖氣沒關。
「片岡那傢伙，我一定要叫他補貼電費。」
就在這個時候，我發現床上好像有東西動了一下。我吃驚地轉頭一看，頓時看傻了眼。床上赫然睡著一個陌生的女人。
一時之間，我以為自己走錯房間了，倉皇地左顧右盼。這陣子我太少進自己的房間，因此感覺整個房間都有點陌生。但我轉念一想，如果我搞錯房間，鑰匙沒道理能打得開。
多半是片岡留下女孩子，自己先走了吧。原來除了葉山廣江之外，他還跟其他女孩子交往。
我走到床邊，搖了搖睡得正熟的女孩肩膀。
「喂，醒醒，該退房了。」
我心裡霎時閃過一抹「這女的該不會死了吧」的不安，幸好她的身體是溫熱的。搖了好一會，她終於微微睜開雙眼。
她眨了眨眼睛，下一瞬間整個人跳了起來。
「你是誰！」
她以毛毯蓋住胸口，看著我的眼神彷彿像在看一隻害蟲。那副神態與年輕時的莎莉‧麥克琳有三分神似。
「我是這房間的主人。」
「這房間的主人？」女人環顧室內。
「是真的。妳看，我有鑰匙。」我舉起自己的鑰匙，在她面前晃了兩下。「我只是把房間借給朋友，賺點外快而已。我跟朋友約好，使用的時間是晚上十點到早上六點，但現在已經……」我一看手錶，嚇得目瞪口呆。「糟了，不快點準備的話，要遲到了！總之已經超過時間了，請妳離開吧。我會跟片岡酌收延後退房的費用。」
「片岡？誰是片岡？」女人皺眉問道。
「片岡啊。帶妳來這裡的人。昨晚妳不是跟她在一起？」
「我不認識什麼片岡。」
「不認識？這不可能。」
「不認識就是不認識。」女人嘟嘴說道。
「那妳到底是跟誰來的？誰把妳帶到了這房間？」
「誰啊……」她想了老半天，突然神情迷惘地問我：「是誰把我帶到這裡來的？」
我開始感到頭痛了。
「妳怎麼會不知道？難道妳是一個人來的？」
「呃……倒也不是……」女人以手扶著下巴，歪著腦袋說道：「有個人把我帶到了這裡來。」
「那就對了，我的問題就是那個人是誰？」
「這個嘛……我醉得七葷八素，根本不記得了。印象中好像是我在某個地方喝酒，然後有個男的跟我搭訕……那男的長什麼樣子啊……」
女人有著一頭短髮，她將手指伸進頭髮裡抓了抓，忽然像是想起了什麼，抬頭望著我說道：「等等，不就是你嗎？」
我差點仰天摔倒。
「妳別胡說八道，絕對不是我。我整晚睡在車子裡。」
「這裡是你的房間吧？」
「是啊。」
「既然是你的房間，不就是你把我帶了進來？」
「我剛剛說了，我只是把房間借給……」我說到一半，已懶得再向她解釋。我學她搔了搔頭，說道：「算了，妳跟誰進來不重要，反正與我無關。總之請妳出去吧。」
女人這時突然瞪大了眼睛，伸手在毛毯裡掏摸一陣，接著大叫一聲。
「怎麼了？」我問。
她緩緩轉頭朝我望來，說道：
「慘了……」
「什麼慘了？」我走上前問道。
「你別過來！」她尖聲喊道。
「什麼啦，妳到底發生什麼事了？」
女人沉默了半晌，抬頭咕噥道：
「我不能離開。」
「為什麼？」
「昨晚沒有戴那個。」
「那個？」
我先是一愣，下一秒才恍然大悟。於是我查看了音響櫃裡的保險套，昨晚確實一個也沒用掉。
「你們該不會弄髒了我的床單吧？」我問道。
女人輕輕拉起毛毯看了一眼，說道：
「好像沒弄髒。」
「那就好。」我鬆了口氣，接著問道：「妳說不能離開，又是怎麼回事？」
「因為……」女人吞吞吐吐了一會，才呢喃說道：「昨天是危險期。」
「危險期？噢……請節哀。」我搔了搔眼睛下方的臉頰。「不過這跟我有什麼關係？」
「我要是就這麼回去，就查不出跟我上床的人是誰了。到時要是懷孕，我要找誰負責？」
「這關我什麼事？我怎麼會知道妳昨晚跟誰上床？」
「但那個人一定是你的朋友。」
「應該吧。我猜是片岡，但我也不敢肯定。」
「既然不敢肯定，你就應該去查個清楚。」女人賴在床上，緊抓著我的毛毯不放。
我開始感到胃陣陣抽痛。
「我為什麼要去查誰跟妳上了床？」
「因為這件事除了你之外，沒有人能幫我。你若敢拒絕，我就大聲尖叫，說你硬拉我進房間。」
「妳別亂來，要是妳這麼做，我會被趕出這棟公寓。」
「不想被趕出去，就乖乖聽我的話。」
我將雙手插在腰際，低頭看著女人，嘆口氣後說道：
「這件事打從一開始就是妳的錯，妳不該隨便跟著陌生人回家。」
「有什麼辦法，那時我喝醉了嘛。我這個人一旦喝醉，是絕對不可能用腦袋的。」女人說完後開始傻笑。
我忍不住想頂一句「就算沒喝醉也一樣」，但我強忍了下來。
「好吧，我們各退一步。我會想辦法幫妳查出昨晚那個男人是誰，一有消息立刻通知妳，但條件是妳必須乖乖回自己的家。」
「我才不要，你一定是想用這種理由騙我出去。我告訴你，我絕對不走。」女人鑽進了毛毯裡。
我不禁感到一個頭兩個大。雖然我很想繼續嘗試說服她，但繼續跟她攪和下去，上班一定會遲到。
我無計可施，只好自顧自地換起衣褲。最近這幾天幾乎沒有好好換過衣服，襪子臭得令我想吐。我打開衣櫥，取出乾淨的衣褲，把舊襪子扔進垃圾桶裡。就在我正打著領帶的時候，女人探出頭來問道：
「你要去上班？」
「是啊。」
「哪間公司？」
我說出了公司名稱。
「聽都沒聽過。」女人咕噥。
「那可真是抱歉。」
「那條領帶不適合你。」
「吵死了！」我罵道。「今天我可以讓妳待在這裡，但只要一查出那個男人的身分，妳就得立刻離開。還有，絕對不能讓隔壁的人發現妳在我房間裡。」
