俗话说“是药三分毒”，非处方药虽然是经过医药学专家的严格遴选，并经国家药品监督管理局批准，但它们仍然是药品。因此，在使用时同样要十分谨慎。
非处方药是消费者自行购买使用的药品，不像处方药那样是在医生指导下使用，所以药品说明书就是指导用药的最重要的信息，它告诉你药品的功能、主治（适应证）、用法用量、注意事项等，全面了解药品特性，才能安全有效地治疗和缓解一些常见病症；认真检查所选药品有无批准文号及非处方药“登记证书编号”；注意药品的内外包装是否有破损及有效期；严格按说明书用药，不得擅自超量、超时使用，若有疑问要向医师咨询。
在具体使用时还需注意以下几点。
对症下药：
非处方药仅适用某些轻微病症，所以应根据症状，结合自己掌握的医药知识，对疾病作出明确判断。选购药品必须针对所患疾病和病情。对于无法自我判断的疾病，则应及时到医院确诊，切忌自行盲目购药。
准确用药：
遵照药品使用说明书，结合患者的性别、年龄、体重因素，掌握用法、用量、次数、疗程。其中用药量特别重要，量不足或疗程不够，病情得不到缓解，超量或过量则产生毒副作用，不能因为是非处方药安全性高就随意加大剂量。
备用买药莫随意：购买备用药时，要选易于储存，包装完整无损的药品，最好购买小包装的整瓶、整盒药品。对零散的药片、药丸、胶囊制剂，要分别装置，并当即标记上药物的名称、用法、用量及失效期，纸袋贮药法不可取。
避免多药并用：
有些人对用药存在贪多心理，认为品种愈多（如中西药合用等）则保险系数愈大。殊不知相互配合不当，品种愈多毒性反应愈重。即使是非处方药，许多药物也不能一起服用，如消炎痛和阿司匹林、硫糖铝（胃溃宁）和西眯替丁、胃舒平和多酶片、优降糖和阿司匹林等。
在使用非处方药疗一段时间后（一般为3天），如症状未见缓解或减轻，应及时去医院诊断治疗，以免延误病情。
