曾经参与法语现场口译的读者一定有过这种感受，在有中法双方参与的小型座谈交流会或是大型的商务活动中，经常会听到中法双方代表会长时间地即兴发言或讲话。如果口译员不用纸笔作记录，是不可能完整地复述长句或段落的。此外，这些发言的内容往往是口译员之前无法预知与掌握的，如果单凭大脑的记忆来翻译的话，经常会出现记忆上的空白与停顿，容易出现漏词、漏句甚至是错翻的情况，影响现场翻译的效果，带来不必要的麻烦和损失。出现这种状态的原因在于，交替传译中口译员接收的信息是快速变化与更新的，往往是上一句话的内容还没有完全记录下来，发言者的下一条信息就已经开始传递，这样，除了几个概念性的信息能记录下来，其他的重要信息则会不断地被遗忘甚至被完全忘记，近而形成恶性循环。在这种情况下口译员是无法完成口译任务的。而法语口译笔记法则是解决这一问题的最好办法，这种笔记方法是法语口译员在紧张的交替传译中，在不干扰听辨源语的情况下，迅速地以简便的符号、文字甚至是图形来记录讲话重点内容与信息的一种笔记方法。有别于速记的是，速记要求记录所有讲话的内容，它只需要记录重点语意信息点和语言逻辑结构。具体来说：法语笔记法是记忆的辅助手段，它的作用是尽可能地记录发言者的“意思”而不是“原话”，帮助译员在短时间内把精神集中在讲话的内容上，并且用笔记符号的形式加以表达。简单说来，法语口译笔记法是由符号、文字乃至于图形加上斜线以及并列符号、连接符号或趋向符号等来体现句与句之间的逻辑关系。
