因此，只有单一色彩的内部或大体相同的色彩之间，才不会有明显的色彩对比关系。在眼睛能看见的条件下，色彩对比关系时刻存在着，这就是色彩对比关系的普通性。由于色彩本身的彼此不同，它们所构成的对比关系，也必然各具特点，而且是别组对比无法代替的。
非彩色有明度的特性，非彩色之间就可以形成非常多样的明度对比关系；有彩色，便同时具有明度对比、色相对比、彩色对比和综合对比等关系。有彩色与非彩色之间，也可形成非常多样的明度对比、彩度对比及综合对比等关系。
明度对比
因明度差别而形成的色彩对比，称之为明度对比。根据明度色标，凡明度在00～30的色彩称为低调色，40～60的色彩称为中间色，70～100的色彩称为高调色。
色彩间明度差别的大小，决定明度对比的强弱。30差以内的对比又称为短调对比；30～50差的对比称为明度中对比，又称中调对比；50差以上的对比，称明度强对比，又称为长调对比。
在明度对比中，如果其中面积最大、作用也最大的色彩或色组属高调色，和另外色的同长调对比，整组对比就称为高长调。用这种方法可以把明度对比大体划分为高长调、高中调、高短调、中间长调、中间中调、中间短调、低长调、低中调、低短调和最长调10种。
一般来说，高调愉快、活泼、柔软、弱、辉煌、轻；低调朴素、丰富、迟钝、重，有寂寞感。明度对比较强时光感强，形象的清晰程度高，锐利，不容易出现误差。明度对比弱、不明朗、模糊不清，则如梦，显得柔和静寂、柔软含混、单薄、晦暗、形象不易看清，效果不好。明度对比太强时，如最长调，会产生空间生硬、眩目、简单化等感觉。
对装饰色彩的应用来说，明度对比的正确与否，是决定配色的光感、明快感，清晰感、以及心理作用的关键。历来图案配色，都重视黑、白、灰的训练。因此在配色中，既要重视非彩色的明度对比的研究，更要重视彩色之间的明度对比的研究，注意检查色的明度对比及其效果，这是应该掌握的方法。
色相对比
因色相的差别而形成的色彩对比叫色相对比。色相的差别虽是因可见光度的长短差别所形成，但不能完全根据波长的差别来确定色相的差别和色相的对比程度。因为红色光与紫色光的波长差最大，但都处于可见光的两极，都接近不可见的波长。从眼睛感觉的角度分析，它们的色相是接近的，色相环反应了这一规律。因此在度量色相差时，不能只依靠测光器和可见光谱，而应借助色相环。
色相对比的强弱决定于色相在色相环上的距离。色相距离在150以内的对比，一般看作色相的不同明度与纯度的对比，因为距离150的色相属于模糊的较难区分的色相。这样的色相对比称为同类色相对比，是最弱的色相对比；色相距离在150以上、450以下的对比，称为邻近色相对比，或近似色相对比，是弱的色相对比；色相距离在1300左右的对比，一般称为对比色相对比，是色相的中对比；色相距离在1800左右的对比，称互补色相对比，是色相强对比。色相距离如果大于1800，从余下的弧度来看，必然小于1800，所以距离恰好在1800的对比，称最强色相对比。
