在中国古典小说中，毛泽东最钟爱、阅读次数最多、评价最高的就是《红楼梦》。他在谈论这部书时曾说过：“读过一遍没有资格参加讨论，最少要读五遍。”在中南海住地，他收藏有多种版本的《红楼梦》，晚年还将不同版本对照着阅读。在这些版本中，《增评补图石头记》就有道光、光绪等不同年代的多个版本及商务印书馆的版本。《增评补图石头记》毛泽东在阅读时都曾用铅笔圈画过。

红楼梦的每一个版本，在许多地方，都各有不同，这本在文字上属于上乘之作。

这部书另一个特点是保有红楼梦初版盛期所绘人物绣像图及章回图260余幅，原真原味。

最大的特点是，除正文外，具有大量的点评文字，除书前评、总评外，其正文每一面又有大量的眉批、夹批，每一章结尾，又有详尽的回后评语，颇有见地赏识，成一家之言。是值得爱好者细读、品味的版本。

在众多的各类《红楼梦》版本中，《增评补图石头记》是影响较大的一种，从道光、光绪年间木刻，到民国影印、万有文库版铅排本等有多种版本。李国文先生曾评说：“在各式各样版本的《红楼梦》中，我只挑选悼红轩原本，东洞庭护花主人评，蛟川大某山民加评，海角居士校正的《增评补图石头记》，在我看来，这也许是最好的版本……就文学论文学来读这部小说，三十年代商务印书馆出的这部书，是很不错的版本。”本书即以该本（万有文库本）为底本，由当代红学专家对其明显的舛误进行校订，又保留了竖排繁体的原貌印制，以使读者品读到原味的《红楼梦》。

红楼梦的每一个版本，在许多地方，都各有不同，这本在文字上属于上乘之作。

这部书另一个特点是保有红楼梦初版盛期所绘人物绣像图及章回图260余幅，原真原味。

原序

石頭記是此書原名。作者相傳不一。究未知出自何人。惟書内記雪芹曹先生删改數過。好事者每傳鈔一部。廟市中。昂其得數十金。可謂不脛而走者矣。然原本目錄一百二十卷。今所藏祇八十卷。殊非全本。卽問稱有全部者。及檢閱仍祇八十卷。讀者頗以爲憾。不佞以是書旣有百二十卷之目。豈無全璧。爰爲竭力搜羅。自藏書家甚至故紙堆中無不留心。數年以來。僅積有二十餘卷。一日偶於鼓擔上得十餘卷。遂重價購之。欣然繙閱。見其前後起伏。尙屬接榫。然漶漫不可收拾。乃同友人細加釐剔。截長補短。鈔成全部。復爲鐫版以公同好。石頭記全書至是始告成矣。書成因幷誌其緣起。以告海内君子。凡我同人。或亦先覩爲快者歟。小泉程偉元識。

南華經曰。大言炎炎。小言詹詹。仁義道德。羽翼經史。言之大者也。詩賦歌詞。藝術稗官。言之小者也。言而至於小說。其小之尤小者乎。士君子上不能立德。次不得立功立言以共垂不朽。而戔戔焉小說之是講。不亦鄙且陋哉。雖然物從其類。嗜有不同。麋鹿食薦。螂且甘帶。其視薦帶之味。固不異於粱肉也。余菽麥不分之無僅識。人之小而尤小者也。以最小之人見至小之書。猶麋鹿螂且適與薦帶相也。則余之於石頭記。愛而讀之。讀而批之。固有情不自禁者矣。客有笑於側者曰。子以石頭記爲小說耶。夫福善禍淫。神之用也。勸善懲惡。聖人之教也。石頭記雖小說。而善惡報施。勸懲垂誡。通其說者且與之神聖同功。而子以其言爲小。何徇其名而不究其實也。余曰。客亦知夫天與海乎。以管窺天。管内之天。卽管外之天也。以蠡測海。蠡中之海。卽蠡外之海也。謂之無所見可乎。謂所見之非天海可乎。幷不得謂管蠡内之天海。别一小天海。而管蠡外之天海。又一大天海也。道一而已。語小莫破。卽語大莫載。語有大小。非道有大小也。石頭記作者旣自名爲小說。吾亦小之云爾。若夫禍福自召。勸懲示儆。余於批本中已反覆言之矣。客無以難曰。子言是也。卽取副本藏之而去。因書其言。以弁卷首。

是書大意。闡發學庸。以周易演消長。以莊騷寓本旨。以國風正貞淫。以春秋示予奪。禮經樂記。融會其中。

學庸周易莊騷國風春秋。是正傳。石頭記則竊衆書而敷衍之。是奇傳。故云。倩誰記去作奇傳。

作者無所不知。上自詩詞文賦。琴理畫趣。下至醫卜星相。彈碁唱曲。葉戲陸博諸雜技。言來悉中肯綮。想八斗之才。又被曹家獨得。
